St. Basil of Caesarea (329-379 A.D.)

Basil, along with his brother Gregory of Nyssa and his friend Gregory Nazianzen, is part of the trio of influential Church Fathers known as "the Cappadocian Fathers." Among his most important works are the treatises against Eunomius (an Arian theologian) and his Hexaemeron. Basil expressed a strong Trinitarian theology as he combatted the Arianism of Eunomius, and the "semi-Arianism" of his day. Nevertheless, in the matter of the filioque, Basil seems to have taken a stance closer to that of the Latin West. This does not detract from the power and theological depth of his work.

Selected Works:

De Spiritu Sancto
