Clement of Alexandria (d. 215 A.D.)
Clement of Alexandria was the first great theologian in the Alexandrian Christian tradition. His doctrine of Christian gnosis was set in opposition to the metaphysical complexities of the gnostic innovators Basilides, Valentinus, Ptolemaeus and similar thinkers. Greek philosophy, according to Clement, was not to be shunned, but rather embraced as the preparation for the reception of the Gospel by the Gentiles. He was the noble precursor of the great Origen of Alexandria (c. 185-254).
